Lantern Illumination

It’s all in the name… the place we can go to at anytime to feel anchored and peaceful. This lantern is inspired by wooden patterns often found decorating outdoor tea houses - simple vertical and horizontal wood strips along with something circular, always beautiful. As I have shared in many places on my website, I have a deep love of circles. I’ve shared my feelings on them as being portals into the known and unknown. This lamp would simply not be the same without the circle adorning the front… it’s a reminder of the ‘portal’ we can access anytime to be with our selves when we wish to feel calm and peaceful.

This was the first lantern I designed, beyond the large box lamp I made as part of a woodworking course (see the About page for more about that lantern), so it has a very special place in my heart. While the structure is somewhat familiar, the overall aesthetic design is very unique for all the reasons I’ve outlined here. It came together beautifully, nothing forced, it simply flowed from a still place.

The lantern is covered in a very special washi called Unryu, which literally means cloud dragon. Long wispy fibres are added back in the paper making process to create this beautiful effect.

A dancing flame is such an important part of the lanterns I create, it simply cannot be omitted. This lantern in particular showcases a very special custom LED oil lamp flame that I hand assemble. It brings back the simplicity and beauty of pre-electric times, bringing an added sense of tranquility and nostalgia to your sanctuary.

I love turning off all the lights, then sitting quietly in the room with just this lantern on. You’ll have to experience this for yourself… it sums up everything about this lantern and my intention behind it, along with the name.

This lantern works best close to a wall and away from other lights... it brings the room/space to life. I personally love having this lantern as the only light on while I sit quietly, perfect for meditation or being nostalgic and reading a book, adding a small amount of ambient light if required. The lamp is notably brighter than a candle flame.

There are some intentional design choices that affect how this lantern looks and behave in your space. It revolves around the paper and the the type of illumination chosen.

For the LED oil flame option, I use a thinner paper so that the dancing flame can be seen more clearly. This option is great when the lamp is several feet away from the viewing point. You will actually see a moving "flame". The flame is lager than a typical candle flame and much closer to that of an oil and spirit lanterns, where a larger wick used.

For the LED candle option, you do not get to see a dancing flame. A thicker paper is used to offer a more diffused representation of the LED source. The overall flickering effect however is very similar to that of the oil flame version. It is also a little brighter, though the oil flame version is still adequately bright enough to light up a small room on its own. This option was introduced if you wish to save about $50. To date, everyone who has purchased this lantern has opted for the oil flame version because the dancing flame so beautiful.
